Mark Gauchet

Dedicated, independent, easygoing, and a fountain of information is how his co-workers would describe Mark, who has been with Lachin Architects for over 25 years, almost longer than Michael Lachin himself.  He also tends toward maintaining a quiet demeanor until he unleashes a sarcastic and typically funny comment that lightens the mood.

A history major and graduate of Tulane (he still bleeds Tulane green), he completed his architecture degree at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette.  Mark relishes new challenges and opportunities to add building types to his repertoire.  His list of favorite projects includes buildings as diverse as the Fourth District Fire Station, Greenwood Mausoleum, and Chalmette Elementary School.

Mark cites Frank Lloyd Wright and the architectural firm of Greene & Greene as major influences.  His home, an Uptown shotgun double that he renovated himself, features details that reflect his appreciation of Prairie and Arts & Crafts style. His renovation efforts have led him to accumulate an extensive and enviable collection of tools. (We asked and, no, you can’t borrow them.)

After a long career in architecture, Mark has learned to appreciate the client who understands the architectural process and values design over cost.  He becomes frustrated by sloppy design and construction documents that lack in detail and accuracy.  The firm often leans on Mark for QA/QC to uphold our extremely high standards for document quality.

If you are lucky enough to have enjoyed the Thoth parade from Mark’s house, which is conveniently situated directly on the parade route, you would quickly realize two important things about him:  he loves Jimi Hendrix, and he makes a great gumbo.  Also important, though not as obvious, is that he has a soft spot for animal rescue and animal care efforts.
